How long have you been playing rugby? Going on 8 years
How did you find out about us (i.e. what/who got you to come to your first AB practice?)
I wanted to play the best rugby I could when I moved to northern California, so Berkeley was the obvious choice being a WPL team and within 100 miles from where I live.
How did you first start playing rugby? What got you into it?
I first started playing rugby in college. I was a basketball and soccer player in high school, and was looking for a team to join in college. I joined both club soccer and club rugby, but it turned out that it was impossible to do both, so I went for the new sport. I liked the friendliness of the team, matched with the aggressiveness of the game, and the challenge of learning a completely new sport! My freshman year of HS english teacher, Kelly McMahon, who played for the Eagles at the time, was the person who put rugby on my radar to begin with though.
Do you have a philosophy/mindset when you practice and play rugby? How do you get into “the zone”?
My mindset is definitely to go as hard as I can when playing rugby - try to be at every breakdown and to look for opportunities to get ball back. Being nervous is part of my pregame ritual, and I think it is also what pumps me up for the match ahead. Every time I see my team playing beautiful rugby, it gets me amped to work harder.
What do you like most about being on this team?
I really like how welcoming everyone is because from what I’ve seen and heard, not every team is so. I also think that that shows on the field - everyone seems to have a good flow and practices and games are kept positive.
Is there a particular player and/or coach that have influenced your development as a player? In what way(s) did they help you?
My college coach, Amy Rusert, really got me into rugby and kicked my ass into learning and following all the rules, so I have immense gratitude for her (not always) kind patience. I also believe that any player I have competed against for position have greatly influenced my drive to perfect my technique.
Do you have a spirit animal? What is it?
I’m pretty sure my spirit animal is either a monkey or a river otter. Still working on figuring out which one!
What is one interesting fact about you that most people wouldn’t know off the bat?
I’m bilingual and have dual citizenship - Polish American.
